Step 5: CA, LA: The Church at the El-Rey Theater

Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA

Whilst I was in LA I went to see my old friends, legendary Australian post punk band, The Church, performing at the El-Rey Theater. It was good to catch up with them again as I’ve known them for over twenty years and at one time or another they all stayed with me at my apartment in NYC.They were surprised to see me in LA as they had no idea I’d left NYC and what I’m now doing. They played a killer show that night and we had a lot of fun. Founding member Marty Willson-Piper has been replaced by former Powderfinger guitarist Ian Haug and everybody in the band seemed much happier. The Church released their first record in 1980, have been cited by REM as a major influence and they are still making remarkable music. With the release of their recent album Further/Deeper, they are once again the critics darlings and touring the world.
