So I finally got out of NYC and flew to San Francisco, where I saw somebody wearing shorts and a summer shirt as I walked out of the airport. In February. I immediately resolved to never spend another winter in NYC. I lived in Australia for twenty years and got used to warm weather. When I first moved to NYC I thought I would stay for two or three years and I could handle winter for that long. Nine years later and I am over it. The last couple of winters were brutal and I don’t want to deal with that anymore.
I was picked up at the airport by Maurizio and Blair who met at Burning Man last year when we were all working on the Lost Tea Party sculptures. They gave me a ride to Scotty’s warehouse in Petaluma, about an hour north of SF. Scotty had very generously offered me a place to stay so I could get my head down and really focus on getting the pre-production together for the journey ahead of me.
I didn’t realize how exhausted I was until I arrived in Petaluma. I felt like crawling into a bed and sleeping for a month.
Three days later, my Producer friend Alan Miller showed up from London, threw me in his rental car and declared we were going on a road trip to L.A..
I was in no position to argue and it sounded like a fun idea. He suggested we should use it as a test run for the journey ahead, but I was still learning the new camera and recording equipment I’d bought prior to leaving NYC so didn’t actually end up shooting that much. Amongst the many many things that Alan does, he records a weekly radio show for East London Radio and so we recorded a road trip show for his listeners which can be heard here.
